What Is a Standby Letter of Credit?

A Standby Letter of Credit (SBLC) is a bank-issued financial instrument that provides payment assurance to a beneficiary if the applicant fails to meet their agreed payment or contractual obligations.

Unlike a traditional Letter of Credit, an SBLC generally works as a backup arrangement rather than the primary payment method. It gives sellers and business partners additional confidence when entering into international trade agreements.

Standby Letter of Credit Process Flow

An SBLC process begins when the buyer submits their trade requirements and requests the required financial instrument.

Once the transaction is reviewed and approved, the required documentation and formalities are completed. The SBLC is then structured according to the agreed terms and prepared for the client’s review.

After the draft is approved, the issuing bank transmits the SBLC through SWIFT MT760 to the beneficiary’s bank. The beneficiary can then rely on the SBLC according to its terms if the applicant fails to meet the agreed obligations.

How to Apply for SBLC?

If you require an SBLC for an international trade transaction, submit your trade details and supporting documents for review. Our team will assess the transaction and explain the requirements and next steps.
