What is a Standby Letter of Credit?
A Standby Letter of Credit (SBLC) is a financial instrument issued by a bank that provides payment assurance to a seller or beneficiary if the buyer fails to meet their contractual obligations.
Unlike a traditional payment method, an SBLC acts as a security measure that gives confidence to both parties involved in a trade transaction. If the buyer does not fulfil the agreed payment terms, the beneficiary can make a claim according to the conditions mentioned in the SBLC.
For businesses involved in international trade, an SBLC helps strengthen trust between buyers and sellers, especially when dealing with new partners, overseas suppliers, or high-value transactions.
Before issuing an SBLC, the issuing bank reviews the applicant’s financial position and transaction details to determine the suitability of the request. Once approved, the SBLC provides assurance to the beneficiary that payment support is available if required.
SBLC Issuance
SWIFT MT760
Irrevocable Once Transmitted
Transferable On Written Confirmation
The SBLC is transmitted through the SWIFT network using the MT760 message format, which provides an authenticated banking communication between financial institutions. Once an SBLC has been issued and transmitted, it generally cannot be cancelled or modified without the agreement of the relevant parties involved.
An SBLC may be transferred to another party if the terms allow it and the required written approvals are obtained from the concerned parties and banking institutions. Businesses use SBLCs to strengthen trust in international transactions, support contractual commitments, and provide additional confidence between trading partners.
Parties Involved in the Standby Letters of Credit
01
Applicant
A client who requests the issuance of MT760. To get the MT760 issued, they need to have sufficient credit lines, or otherwise provide financial security or a cash margin.
02
Beneficiary
The beneficiary is the party in whose favour the SBLC is issued. Typically, this is the seller, supplier, or business partner who receives payment assurance through the standby facility.
03
Issuing Bank
The issuing bank is the financial institution that issues the SBLC on behalf of the applicant. It provides the payment commitment according to the terms and conditions mentioned in the SBLC.
04
Correspondence / Advising Bank
The advising bank acts as an intermediary between the issuing bank and the beneficiary’s bank. It authenticates and communicates the issued SBLC to the beneficiary when both banks do not have a direct relationship.
05
Supplier's Bank
The beneficiary’s bank is the financial institution where the beneficiary maintains their account. It assists in receiving the SBLC communication and supporting the beneficiary throughout the banking process.
